Tony Russell

Director, Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Princess Alexandra Hospital

Tony is an Endocrinologist and Director of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. He also currently sits as a Co-Chair of the Statewide Diabetes Clinical Network, Queensland. In partnership with Prof Claire Jackson, Tony was instrumental in developing the innovative model of care managing complex type 2 diabetes in the community with up-skilled GPs at Inala Primary Care. His clinical work also sees him delivering care to remote centres in Queensland with face-to-face visits and telehealth. Tony is a Chief Investigator on an NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence Improving Quality and Safety at the interface between primary and secondary level care. Tony has collaborated with Prof Brian Oldenburg, Monash University, assessing the Telephone Linked Care (TLC) programme; a computer based programme with voice recognition and conversational technology that assists patients in self-management.  His other major research interest has been collaborating with Prof Nathan Efron and Prof Rayaz Malik, assessing novel ophthalmic markers of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
